Banaras Hindu University and its outstanding achievements are tribute to the vast vision, indomitable spirit and unflagging zeal of our founding father, “Bharat Ratna” Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya Ji. It is a monument to his selfless service in the cause of Indian education. BHU always ranks among the top Universities of India, established in 1916. The main campus spreads over 1300 acres. The University harbor 6 Institutes, 16 faculties and 158 departments. Total enrolled students exceeds 30,000 per year. It also has over 75 hostels including IMS, NT, Management Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Law, Agriculture etc.

The College of Medical Sciences was established in 1960 by converting the then running Ayurvedic College with Professor K.N. Udupa as its founder principal. The College then had 10 departments – 9 in Modern Medicine and 1 in Indian Medicine. In 1963, MBBS training was recognized both by General Medical Council, U.K. and Medical Council of India. The Post Graduate Institute of Indian Medicine (since 1963) was merged with Institute of Medical Sciences established in 1971. Further growth of postgraduate education continued with approval of DM and MCh courses in 10 Super-specialties in 1976. In 1978, the existing faculty was bifurcated into the Faculty of Ayurveda and Faculty of Medicine to facilitate their independent growth. Later in the year 2010 were added Faculty of Dental Science in year 2006 and College of Nursing.
Currently, there are 22 departments of broad specialities and 11 superspecialities imparting training to undergraduate and postgraduate students in Modern medicine. His Excellency, the President of India, in the capacity of Visitor of the University, has very kindly approved the
Creation of Faculty of Dental Sciences in the Institute during the year 2010. Sir Sunderlal Hospital attached to the IMS, BHU Varanasi, is a modern hospital, with 1566 beds, 22 Operation theatres with almost all essential components and services. The annual outpatient attendance is about 12,00,000 and the indoor admissions number about 54,000 /year. A number of special clinics including Well Baby Clinic & Immunization Clinic, Geriatric Clinic, De-addiction Clinic, Peadiatric Hematology-Oncology Unit 8i Thalassemia Day care Unit, are also being run. S.S Hospital is presently catering to the health needs of more than 20 crores population in its vast catchments area that includes Eastern UP and adjoining states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and even neighboring country Nepal.
Department of Microbiology
With the growing knowledge about microbes causing infection with or without disease production, the discipline of Microbiology had separated from the main discipline of Pathology on February 28,1966. At the time of inception, the department started only with one professor and one reader, housed at the ground floor of Nursing School. Professor Hardas Singh, the founder head of the department, being an Ex army man nurtured the department under strict disciplinary rules. It was a major boost to the department when it was shifted to the ground floor of the present building in 1969.
By the year 1971, the department was enriched with one Professor, one Reader and one Lecturer along with three demonstrators. As reader Dr P.C Sen and as lecturer Dr. Suhas C. Sanyal were imparting the knowledge of Microbiology to M.D., M.B.B.S. and Nursing students. Later in 1979, two more floors were added to the building with the generous financial aid of University Grant Commission (UGC). UGCalso augmented the department with total faculty positions of 2 Professors, 5 Readers and 4 Lecturers. However, presently department has addition of one more permanent position of Assistant Professor from Faculty of Dental Sciences. The department admits 4 junior residents and three senior residents (trauma centre) every year. There are 12 Ph. D. scholars, two post docs and one Research Associate in the department.
The department has Bacteriology, Immunology, Parasitology, Mycology, Anaerobic Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology and Virology as functionally independent divisions. Teaching is an integral part of departmental academic activity. The department has been engaged in training MBBS, B.D.S, B.Sc. nursing, MD students and Ph.D. scholars. It offers excellent opportunities for research in infectious diseases. The department is highly dynamic, engaged in imparting quality education, collaborative research and indulged in variety of community oriented services. During the last 5 years department has published more than 180 research articles in peer reviewed journal with citations more than 4000. In the recent past the department has organized National IAMM congress in 2011. One State level UP – UK Chapter of IAMM – 2015. Till date, department has produced 59 Ph.D. and 110 M.D. In future department wishes to become self sufficient in applying bioinformatics tools in our molecular experiments, establishment of Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory and NAAC accredited laboratories and techniques. Most importantly, the department is continuously working on Bacteriophages for more than one decade specially in the area of Phage therapy in clinical settings.

Varanasi is well connected to New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Mumbai by air. Lai Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Babatpur is the nearest airport for Varanasi. The airport is about 35 km from the conference venue. Private and public transports are available to and from the airport.
By Rail :
Network of Indian railways very well connects Varanasi to all the major city of India. The two nearest railway stations are Varanasi Junction (BSB) popularly known as Cantt Railway Station and Mughal Sarai Junction (MGS).
